Join a Local Homeschool Co-op or Association

Most communities have local co-ops or associations. Benefits range from support, mentorship, sharing curriculum for parents, to field-trips, extra-curricular activites, and opportunities to learn together for students.

Being a member of a local homeschool group also allows you to receive a discount on your HSLDA membership fee.

Being a first-generation homeschool family, there was a bit of a learning curve. Here are a few things we often suggest to parents with questions about homeschooling.

Homeschool Conventions are held annually at the state or regional level. These provide opportunities to hear from experts in the field of homeschooling as well as provide opportunities to explore various curriculum options.

Read Read Read

In the early years of homeschooling do not discount the benefit of cuddling up and reading aloud to your children. This is not only good quality time, but also a great way to increase vocabulary and broaden our children’s understanding.

Create an Environment of Learning

One of the great benefits of homeschooling is simply making learning part of life. From gardening to cooking, carpentry to automotive repair, all are opportunities to teach our children while spending time with them.

Create a Mission Statement

Having a mission statement will give you something to center your focus when times get tough.

There are many learning styles, and despite shared genetics and environment your children could each possess their own. Some are visual, some are hands on, and still others learn best from reading, or listening. Some prefer background noise, while learn best in complete silence, getting to know your child’s learning style will go a long way toward maximizing potential while minimizing frustration. And no matter their style, homeschooling provides the greatest flexibility in allowing your child to learn in a way that is best for them.
